How the gold price is formed

What affects the price of investment gold

The price of investment gold starts with the international market, but it doesn't stop there. Global demand, a product's liquidity and its popularity can make the difference between two bars or coins that look alike.

All the coins and bars Avangard offers are directly linked to the international gold price. That is the basis of the calculation, but each product has its own supply and demand. Highly liquid, fast-selling products have lower margins and a price per gram closer to the spot price. Limited editions or themed series, such as Lunar, can carry higher margins, especially when seasonal demand is high. The more sought-after and rare a product is, the more its price reflects not only the gold but also its market value.

What moves the market

Why the gold price changes

The gold price is always moving, driven by the global economic balance. Investment demand reacts quickly to the financial, political and monetary climate, making gold a barometer of uncertainty.

Gold rises when demand outstrips supply and falls when investment pressure eases. Inflation, interest rates, financial crises and geopolitical tensions are the main drivers of interest in gold. In unstable times investors look for protection, and gold becomes a safe-haven asset. On the supply side, most gold comes from mining, a slow process, supplemented by recycled gold and exchange reserves. The international price is set daily on global markets, and in Romania the official price in lei is published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

Two uses, different values

Decorative gold or investment gold?

For more than 170 years, Metalor has been synonymous with purity, technology and international standards.

Decorative gold or investment gold?

Although it is the same precious metal, gold for jewellery and investment gold serve completely different purposes. The difference shows clearly in price, liquidity and long-term returns.

Jewellery carries high costs for labour, design, transport and taxes, and its price per gram can be well above the international gold price. It is also subject to VAT. Investment gold, by contrast, is a standardised product, easy to value and exempt from VAT in the European Union. The margin is much lower, and the price mainly reflects the value of the metal. As a rule, smaller products cost more per gram because of fixed production costs, but they remain far better than jewellery as an investment.

Yes. When inflation is high, money loses purchasing power and investors look for protection in real assets. Gold responds naturally to this, and over the long term inflation shows up in its rising price.

In general, internationally recognised investment gold products have similar margins. However, limited editions or series with a new design each year, such as Lunar, Panda or Kangaroo, can be priced higher because of demand and their collector value.

No. Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the European Union. VAT applies only if the price per gram is at least 80% above the spot price, which happens with very high-margin products, not with standard investments.
